José Martí: His Life, Death, and Legacy
Celebrating Jose Marti’s Birthday
For the past seventeen years, on January 28th, Florida International University’s Biscayne Campus has hosted a breakfast celebrating the birthday of the great Cuban writer and patriot Jose Marti. The proceeds from this breakfast have been – and will continue to be – used to fund student scholarships, endow chairs, and academic buildings. Another important purpose of this annual celebration is to raise the level of awareness within our University and our community about this very special and influential individual.
Jose Marti was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1853. Aside from being a revolutionary and a fighter for freedom and justice for all people,
he was also one of the greatest writers of the Hispanic world. In his poetry, particularly, we see a great spirituality, a sensitivity that lies at the center of all his work.
